What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
The Accelerated Reader program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level.
Most of the books in the media center have an accompanying AR quiz. The book level assigned to each commercially purchased book had been provided by experienced teachers or staff who worked for Renaissance Learning. Ashford Park marked each book that has an AR quiz with the appropriate color label on the spine of the book. The following are color labels designated for various grade levels:
Purple 0.1 to 0.9 points
Green 1.0 to 1.9
Red 2.0 to 2.9
Gold 3.0 to 3.9
Blue 4.0 to 4.9
Neon orange 5.0 to 5.9
Neon Green 6.0 to 6+
As an added incentive to the students, color photos of the APS students who reached certain reading goals are placed on the AR Wall of Fame in the front of the Media Center. To be included in the Wall of Fame, the following are the criteria set by the Building Leadership Team of our school:
K to 1st Grade - at least 5 points
Grade 2 - at least 10 points
Grade 3 - at least 15 points
Grade 4 - at least 20 points
Grade 5 - at least 25 points
Happy Reading Everyone!!!
